October 30, 2012 The 11th Annual Sopinka United Way Luncheon celebrated that lawyers in Burlington and Hamilton have raised over $175,000.00 for the United Way this year. Paul Sweeny chaired the United Way Sopinka Luncheon at which the Honourable Justice Marie Deschamps of the Supreme Court of Canada was the guest speaker. Dana Robbins, Publisher of the Hamilton Spectator, presented Bill Morris with the John F. Evans Award of Community Distinction for his contribution to the community.

September 22, 2012 Megan Nicholls and the ESB Lawyers team raised $750 for the Miles for Smiles ride. This event raised awareness and support for the Good Shepherd Centres, which helps homeless and street-involved youth in a variety of ways. March 7, 2012 Michael Bordin co-chaired and Paul Sweeny spoke about “Rule 20: Motions for Summary Judgment” at the Hamilton Law Association’s Commercial Litigation Seminar on March 7th. Paul is particularly qualified having actively participated in the hearing before the Ontario Court of Appeal in June which formed the seminal judgment issued by the Court of Appeal in the fall of 2012.
February 29 to March 29, 2012 Paul Sweeny continued his OBA President’s Tour with stops in Kingston (February 29); Woodstock (March 1); Oshawa (March 5) and Cobourg (March 6). Paul spoke at Life after Law School events at Queens Law School on February 29th and will be speaking the University of Western Ontario on March 13th and Osgoode Law School on March 14th. As President of the OBA, Paul will host the first day of New York State Bar/ Ontario Bar Association Summit which takes place in Toronto on March 28th. The Summit continues in Buffalo, New York on March 29th.

February 24, 2012 On February 24th, John F. Evans judged the Wilson Moot at which Canadian law students argue Charter issues. 2012 marks the 20th anniversary of the Wilson Moot, which honours the contributions made by the late Honourable Bertha Wilson. John Evans reports that it was quite an enlightening experience. The young counsel were remarkably articulate. John does acknowledge he was very much in the shadow of his fellow jurist Peter Hogg.

February 16, 2012 On February 16th, Liza Sheard participated in a panel discussion at the Hamilton Law Association’s 10th Annual Estates and Trusts Seminar. Her talk was about professional liability and knowing your client.

February 9, 2012 Liza Sheard’s paper on “The Capacity to Instruct Counsel” presented at the OBA Institute 2012 Trusts and Estates Program on February 9th was very well received and has generated a considerable amount of interest and discussion.

January 10, 2012 On January 10th, Andrea Hill chaired the HLA Roundtable Session “Dealing with Self-Represented Litigants.” Participants received practical advice and guidance about how to interact with self-represented litigants and deal with ethical concerns.
January 1, 2012 In January, Paul Sweeny attended the Manitoba Bar Association Mid-Winter Meeting in Winnipeg from January 19th through 21st and spoke at the University of Toronto Law School on January 26th as part of the OBA’s Life After Law Program. He also attended the Swearing-in of Justices Philip Downes, Aston Hall and Heather McArthur in Toronto on January 11th. Paul’s OBA Presidential Tour continued with a visit to Newmarket on January 24th.
